Science Fiction Kitchen Appliances Come True

In the early days of the modern age, writers created many interesting visions of what the kitchens of the future would look like. Would family meals become people sitting around a dispenser taking food in pill form, or would people have robot chefs that could prepare meals with a simple command? While we thankfully avoided “pill food,” the robot chef has found his way into the kitchen, and you probably already have one – he just doesn't look like we thought he would.

In Space Cadet, famous science fiction writer Robert Heinlein imagined a time when food, even whole meals, would come prepackaged, frozen, and ready to cook; All that the perspective diner had to do was put the frozen meal into a cooking machine for a few seconds (the specific time was indicated on the package) and when the timer went off, the meal would be ready to eat. A few years later, the first microwave came onto the market, and that prediction became a reality. As food technology continues to progress, the possibilities have expanded greatly- now microwaves have special settings for everything from defrosting to cooking popcorn.

Specialized machines, often with sensors to aid the cook, have become common place. From bread makers with programmable routines for creating perfect loafs to mechanized wine openers to electronic ovens with push-button controls, machines have become indispensable in the kitchen. Even the measuring cup has gotten a technological upgrade, with new electronic models able to do conversions on the spot.

Machines have also eliminated the need to hand wash dishes. A person can just put the dirty dishes in, turn the machine on, and come back to find clean dishes. Many of the newer dishwashers have programmable settings and sensors that detect when dishes are clean. In fact, dishwashers have become so common now that they may even seem mundane.

We can even cook using magnetic fields. Induction cooking became a reality years ago. By using a magnetic field to directly heat pots and pans, the induction range or stove is both safe and clean, and will remain cool to the touch even when cooking.

Even the cookbook is obsolete, replaced by an almost infinite archive of online recipes from all over the world.
As the tastes and priorities of the average family have changed, so has the face of kitchen technology. Gone are the days of imagining a robot maid, now people want smaller, more energy efficient appliances.
